“This journey has taught me to always pick yourself up, not allow anything to stand in your way and that the only secret to achieving your dreams is hard work.”
I had never heard of Lilly Singh until meeting Humble the Poet at the Canada Reads Finale. He shared that he was looking forward to reading How to Be A Bawse, written by his friend and self-described “soul-mate”, fellow you-tuber, Lilly Singh (aka IISuperwomanII. You might ask (like I did) what is a Bawse? A Bawse, as described by Singh, is “a person who exudes confidence, reaches goals, gets hurt efficiently, and smiles genuinely because they’ve fought through it all and made it out the other side”.
Lilly Singh is a prolific you-tube star – Forbes shared that as of July 2017, she had 11.5 million followers! She inspires young women across the world and has even collaborated with Smashbox to sell a lipstick named Bawse. She grew up in Scarborough before recently moving to LA. Her success has come from hard work and dedication to her followers as she made videos to deal with her own depression.
This is a fabulous book for young women – as I was reading it, I couldn’t help but think that the message would connect with my daughter and her peers! It is inspiring, positive and full of great tips to be positive, work hard, be yourself and enjoy life… all while being a fun book that is easy to read and digest by reading a few pages (with important messages) at a time.
I’ve only recently started following Lilly Singh and I find her amazing! She’s currently doing this campaign called #GirlLove where her website sells Rafiki bracelets, the proceeds of which will help send Kenyan girls to school. How much more “bawse” can a person get? 😊❤️
